Eagles Face Harsh Reality After Sixth Straight Loss
Philadelphia sits last in the league in total offense as Saquon Barkley insists the team can still recover.

The Philadelphia Eagles are entering the final stretch of the regular season with a 2-6 record and little momentum to show for their efforts. The team is currently at the bottom of the National Football Conference in overall standings and ranks last in the league in total offense.
According to CBS Sports data, the Eagles average 265.3 yards per game. Their scoring output is also among the lowest in the NFL, with an average of 17.1 points per game. This marks the first time since 2012 that the franchise has lost six consecutive games. The last time they started a season 2-6 was in 1999, during Andy Reid's first year as head coach.
Running back Saquon Barkley addressed the media regarding the team's direction. He stated that the front office provided assurances he would not be traded. Barkley said he wants to remain with the team to help them return to title contention. "We're getting coached great," Barkley said. "We're having great week of practices, its just not translating to the game."
Barkley acknowledged that the team's identity has shifted. "We're not the big, bad Eagles anymore, I guess, right?" he said. "We've got to understand that." This sentiment contrasts with the expectations set at the start of the year, when the team was viewed as a Super Bowl contender after winning the championship in 2024.
Head coach Nick Sirianni is scheduled to speak to the media at 3 p.m. on Monday. Sirianni has maintained support for his staff despite the poor results. When asked if first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion would keep his job, Sirianni offered a non-committal response. "I'm not thinking about any of that stuff right now," Sirianni said. "We need to get better as a whole. And I got a lot of faith in everybody in that locker room."
The offensive struggles are evident in recent performances. Against Washington, the Eagles scored only 10 points despite facing a defense that allowed 28.7 points per game. Barkley rushed for 30 yards on 13 carries, with his longest run being five yards. Kicker Jake Elliott missed a 41-yard field goal, and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell allowed a 53-yard reception by Treylon Burks.
Tanner McKee has started three games in place of injured quarterback Jalen Hurts. During those starts, the Eagles have averaged 15 points and 270.3 yards per game. Center Jordan Mailata noted the impact of missing longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. "You can't win games by not being able to be efficient in the run game, not being able to protect the QB," Mailata said. Safety Michael Carter also suffered an abdominal injury in the most recent game.
Historical context suggests the path back to the playoffs is steep. Only three teams in NFL history have started 2-6 and made the postseason. The 1970 Cincinnati Bengals won their final seven games to finish 8-6 but lost their first playoff game. The 2020 Washington Football Team finished 7-9 and lost in the playoffs. The 2022 Jacksonville Jaguars finished 9-8, won one playoff game, and then lost to Kansas City.
The Eagles host the New York Giants on Sunday. The Giants currently lead the NFC East with a 4-2-1 record. This game represents a critical opportunity for Philadelphia to improve its standing before the schedule concludes.
