Aston Villa arrives in Spain on Tuesday, November 2, to defend its perfect record in the UEFA Champions League league phase. The English club sits second in the standings, trailing only Paris Saint-Germain on goals scored. Barcelona, the hosts, occupy eighth place after a recent slump in form, creating a stark contrast between the two contenders.

Villa has won its first three European fixtures this season, accumulating 12 goals. The squad, led by manager Unai Emery, aims to replicate its 2024-25 run to the quarterfinals. That previous campaign ended in a narrow loss to PSG in the knockout rounds. In domestic English football, Villa has struggled, securing only one point from its first four Premier League matches before climbing to ninth place following a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Barcelona enters the match with mixed results in Europe. The team lost 4-2 to PSG in its most recent Champions League fixture, ending a perfect start to the continental campaign. That defeat followed a 2-1 home loss to Real Madrid in La Liga. However, Barcelona returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Alaves, reclaiming the top spot in the Spanish league after a brief dip to second place.

Historical data shows Barcelona as the clear favorite, yet Unai Emery holds a poor record against the Catalan side. The Spanish manager has faced Barcelona 30 times in his career, winning just three. His lowest win percentage against any opponent he has managed at least five times sits at 10% against this specific rival. A 6-1 defeat in March 2017 while managing PSG remains his heaviest European loss at Camp Nou.

Injury issues affect Barcelona's defensive lineup. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, and Xavi Espart are out, forcing Hansi Flick to use Brian Farinas at right-back and Frenkie de Jong in central defense. Andreas Christensen continues his recovery from a thigh injury and will not play. Aston Villa also misses key defenders Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, leaving manager Emery with no new injury concerns beyond those already absent.

The teams have not met since the European Super Cup final in January 1983. Villa won that aggregate 3-1, securing its first-ever victory against Barcelona. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick described Villa as being in great form under Emery. He noted that at this level, any opponent has the quality to cause problems, emphasizing the team's focus on finishing among the top eight in the league phase.

Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon, now playing for the Spanish club, acknowledged the challenge ahead. He stated that Villa is always fully engaged and possesses one of the best managers in the world. The match kicks off at 20:00 GMT at Spotify Camp Nou, with Al Jazeera providing live updates starting at 17:00 GMT.
