New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is a candidate for a trade back to his former team as the NFL trade deadline approaches.

The Giants sit atop the NFC East for the first time since 2015 and would hold the number three seed in the conference if the season ended today. This standing contrasts sharply with their divisional rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, who are 2-5 and have lost five consecutive games. The Dallas Cowboys improved to 3-4 with a Monday night victory, while the Washington Commanders have only one win on the season.

Barkley returned to action on Monday after missing two games due to a hamstring injury. He rushed for 62 yards and one touchdown but appeared to aggravate his injury in the first half. The Eagles had 25 players on the injury report for that game, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, tight end Dallas Goedert, and guard Landon Dickerson. Lane Johnson, a longtime tackle for Philadelphia, retired at the start of October. The Eagles also lost star wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots during the offseason.

Arguments for the trade center on Barkley’s proven production and the Giants’ need for a reliable ball carrier. He has rushed for more than 1,000 yards five times in his career, including a record 2,504 yards in 2024. Head coach John Harbaugh stated it would be "great" to be in a "Saquon Barkley circumstance" where the primary runner is clear. The Giants recently cut running back Najee Harris following his comments about the rotation. Last week, quarterback J.J. McCarthy led the team in rushing with 26 yards. Cam Skattebo is currently the primary back, but the team needs additional depth.

Counterarguments focus on the financial cost and the risk of nostalgia. Barkley is 29 years old, an age when running backs often see declining performance. The Giants declined to sign him in 2024 when he entered free agency, leading him to join Philadelphia. A reunion could repeat the pattern seen with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was signed this season, elevated to the active roster, and then cut after three games and 20 total snaps with no receptions. Critics suggest trading for Barkley would be a short-term fix rather than a long-term solution.

The Giants have found success with quarterback Jaxson Dart and Skattebo in recent months. Skattebo has 129 carries for 530 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games with Dart. While Skattebo has had ball-security issues, he performed well in a Week 7 game after being benched. Trading Skattebo for Barkley would mean giving up a younger player who fits the team's current identity for a veteran who may require replacement soon. The Eagles likely prefer to keep their top offensive playmaker within the division to maintain a competitive edge.

The decision involves weighing immediate impact against long-term roster stability. Barkley offers a higher level of proven production, but the Giants are early in their rebuild around Dart. The Eagles are looking for ways to stabilize an offense that has struggled despite having a top-tier running back. The trade deadline provides a window for the Giants to test the market for a veteran upgrade before committing to their current young core.
