NJ/NY Gotham FC captured the NWSL Shield for the first time in club history on Monday, the final day of the 2026 regular season. The team defeated the Utah Royals 2-0 at home to clinch the award, which goes to the top seed in the league standings at the end of the regular season. The win marked the 14th clean sheet for Gotham this season, a league-best total.
Midge Purce directed the offense with two assists, setting up Jaedyn Shaw for her 11th goal of the year. Shaw scored in her 100th NWSL appearance, a milestone reached during the match. Rose Lavelle also returned to the lineup after missing time to injury. The result capped a run that saw Gotham occupy the top of the table for 12 consecutive weeks.
The club enters the postseason as the defending NWSL champions. They secured a playoff spot last year by finishing in the final qualifying position. This season, they finished first. Their next match is against the Seattle Reign on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET, a game that will be streamed on ESPN.
Angel City FC moved into second place after a 4-1 win over Boston Legacy FC. The victory extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, a mark only one other team in league history has reached before the playoffs. Rookie Taylor Suarez contributed to six goals in her last seven games. Angel City now share the league lead in goals scored with Kansas City, both at 54.
San Diego Wave finished third after a 1-0 win over Bay FC. Mimi Van Zanten scored the only goal in the ninth minute. The result gave the Wave a club-record seven-game unbeaten run heading into the postseason. They missed the Shield by one position but maintain strong form.
Kansas City Current secured the final home playoff berth with a 2-0 away win at Racing Louisville. The team has lost only one of its last 10 matches. Kansas City holds a 32-match home unbeaten streak in the regular season, a statistic that does not include last year's first-round playoff loss as the top seed.
Washington Spirit locked in a home quarterfinal for the third straight year with a 2-0 win over Chicago Stars. Trinity Rodman scored the decisive goal. The Spirit lost defensive midfielder Hal Hershfelt to a season-ending ACL injury earlier in the week.
Portland Thorns finished sixth after Sophia Wilson scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Houston Dash. Wilson converted a retaken penalty in the 70th minute, maintaining a 100% conversion rate on her NWSL career penalties. She finished the regular season with 15 goals, third in the Golden Boot race.
Seattle Reign qualified for their ninth postseason appearance with a 1-0 win over Orlando Pride. Jordyn Bugg scored the winner in the 68th minute. The game drew 16,095 fans, the third-largest crowd in Reign history.
Utah Royals missed their chance to improve their playoff seeding after losing to Gotham. The team has gone 305 minutes without a goal in its last three games. Leading scorer Mina Tanaka remains out with a hamstring injury.
North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit FC were eliminated from playoff contention. The Courage won 1-0 against Denver but lost the tiebreaker to Seattle. Ashley Sanchez leads the Golden Boot race with 20 goals, tying the single-season record.
Chicago Stars finished last in the league with 17 points. The team scored 17 goals and conceded 71, both league-worst totals. Racing Louisville finished second to last, having not won a match since August 19.
