The Denver Broncos defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Monday night, a result that moved Denver to the top of the AFC West. The decisive moment was not a turnover or a big play, but a false start penalty against Chiefs right tackle Jaylon Moore in the final seconds of regulation. The flag wiped out a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Rashee Rice, which would have given Kansas City the win.

The sequence began on fourth and goal from the one-yard line as the clock expired. Referee Clete Blakeman’s crew flagged Moore, moving the Chiefs back to the six-yard line. On the next play, Jonathon Cooper and Nick Bonitto collapsed the pocket, allowing Malcolm Roach to sack Mahomes and preserve the lead. The penalty erased a three-game lead the Chiefs had held over Denver in the division race.

The result improved the Broncos to 6-2, giving them a half-game advantage over the 5-2 Chiefs. The teams have now split their season series. Broncos head coach Sean Payton reached a personal milestone with his 200th career NFL victory. Payton credited the crowd noise for contributing to Moore’s false start. Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Mahomes argued the infraction was marginal. Reid described the call as one man’s opinion, noting he saw movement in Moore’s head but not a clear false start.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, another flag on Moore created confusion. With Kansas City leading 24-13, a pass to rookie Emmett Johnson fell short. Officials initially spotted the ball two yards shy of the first down. Denver declined the penalty. Before the punt, officials re-spotted the ball less than a foot from the marker. This change forced a punt that placed Denver at its 20-yard line. Reid admitted he might have kept the offense on the field had he known the original spot.

Denver capitalized on the opportunity. Bo Nix threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins on fourth and goal. Jaylen Waddle caught a two-point conversion, bringing the score to 24-21. The Chiefs reached the Denver 30-yard line but were sacked by Alex Singleton. Kicker Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal attempt in steady rain, marking his fifth miss from 50-plus yards this season.

The miss gave Denver possession at its 44-yard line with 2:31 remaining. Rookie Jonah Coleman caught a 51-yard pass and ran for a five-yard touchdown to take the lead. Mahomes had just under two minutes to respond. The Chiefs drove to the one-yard line with 15 seconds left. The defense stopped Kansas City, aided by the false start, to secure the win.

The Broncos have won 15 consecutive one-score games. Nix leads the league with 15 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime during his first three seasons. Denver scored 70 points in the fourth quarter this season despite scoring 26, 37, and 36 points in the first three quarters. This defeat marked only the third time in 83 games that the Chiefs lost after holding a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.

Moore stated that the closeness of the situation made the loss hurt more than usual. The outcome leaves the Chiefs in second place in the AFC West. The Broncos hold a slim advantage heading into the final stretch of the season.
