Municipal leaders in Michigan are adjusting procurement habits in response to shifting geopolitical risks. The city of Dearborn has completed a full refill of its municipal fuel stations to prepare for potential disruptions in global supply chains.

The city spent $75,000 to add 20,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud stated that this stockpile will power emergency vehicles, snowplows, and other city-owned transport. With the reserves now full, the city estimates it can maintain standard operations for a period of four to six weeks.

Hammoud attributed the decision to federal signals regarding the state of relations between the United States and Iran. He cited recent reports of potential new combat operations and a federal directive requiring U.S. Army bases to stockpile 90 days of supplies. "We are reading the tea leaves on the messages that the Pentagon is putting out," Hammoud said. He described the purchase as necessary to sustain service levels for residents.

The city typically waits until fuel reserves drop to low levels before making new purchases. Hammoud noted that current uncertainty has changed that timeline. "Now what we have to continually ask is at what point in time do we top off again?" he said. The move allows the administration to monitor supply chains more closely following the U.S. intervention in Iran.

Hammoud said he was unaware of other cities adopting similar pre-emptive measures. He expressed a desire for supply stability, noting that municipal managers should not have to make these logistical decisions. "We should be able to have the peace of mind that gas and diesel supply chains aren't going to be disrupted," he added.
