Jordanian authorities arrested three men on Monday after a violent engagement in Karak governorate. The suspects, who all sustained injuries during the operation, are believed to be responsible for a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church that occurred on Friday.
The Public Security Directorate stated that no members of the security forces were hurt during the dawn raid. The incident took place in the village of Hammoud, a community with a minority Christian population located south of Amman. The initial shooting happened while a funeral service was underway at the church.
Mazen Al-Faraya, the minister of interior, confirmed the identities of the three men on state television. He described the group as the perpetrators of the "terrorist act" and noted that they offered strong resistance before being subdued. Al-Faraya said security services identified the individuals early in the investigation and used all available resources to secure their custody.
In a phone interview with Al-Mamlaka, Al-Faraya said the security services had fulfilled their duties. He added that the three men were taken into custody with severe injuries after the confrontation. The minister emphasized that the operation was a direct response to the incident that disrupted the local religious community.
King Abdullah II ordered a firm response to the attackers, describing them as outlaws of Islam who sought to divide the nation. The Public Security Directorate issued a statement saying the suspects had met their just fate, though it did not name the men or link them to specific militant groups. No organization has claimed responsibility for the Friday attack.
