A Houston man is in critical condition after a 2:26 a.m. shooting at an apartment complex on Thursday morning. The incident left the victim with a gunshot wound to his upper body, and he was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police investigators say the resident was awake by the sound of someone kicking his door and trying to turn the handle. His girlfriend and their one-year-old child were inside the unit. When asked if she recognized the person outside, the girlfriend said she did not know him.

The resident retrieved an AR-15 rifle and opened the door. An argument began between the two men. Police report that the resident fired the weapon while the suspect allegedly attempted to push his way into the apartment. Both men are believed to be in their 30s.

Investigators noted the suspect was wearing a Halloween costume resembling a character from the film Dumb and Dumber. The outfit included an orange suit and a top hat. Police believe the suspect lives in the same complex and may have been intoxicated after returning from a party. They think he mistakenly went to the wrong door. That theory remains under investigation.

The shooting took place in the 2300 block of Bering Drive. No further arrests had been made as of the morning report.
