A 30-year-old U.S. Border Patrol agent has been charged with murder in the death of his wife.
Abel Garza faces one count of first-degree felony murder for the death of Mayra Alejandra Landeros, 28. He also faces two counts of endangering a child and two counts of abandoning a child, each a second-degree felony. Webb County Jail set his bond at $1 million.
Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez said officers responded to a report of a man knocking on doors for help just before 3 a.m. Wednesday. The home is near Texana Street and Nocona Street. A police drone spotted a vehicle leaving the scene as units arrived. Officers stopped the car and found Landeros on the back floorboard with critical stab wounds. She died later at the hospital.
Police identified the driver as Garza and confirmed he was Landeros's husband. Officers found two children safe inside the residence. Joe Baeza of the Laredo Police Department said the department was working with the District Attorney's Office to formulate charges.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed Garza is an off-duty agent with the Laredo Sector. The agency stated it arrested him at 6 a.m. and that its Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the case. Landeros's death is the sixth homicide recorded in Laredo for 2026.
