Jocelyn Benson has won the Michigan governor's race, according to an NBC News projection, defeating Republican Representative John James. Benson, the state's secretary of state, will succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer. This outcome extends Democratic control of the governor's mansion for four additional years.

The victory marks a shift in Michigan's political history. It is the first time since the 1960s that a Democrat has succeeded a Democratic governor in the state. James, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives, now loses his elected position.

Benson has held the office of secretary of state since 2019. She gained national visibility during the 2020 presidential election cycle. At that time, she served as the chief election officer for Michigan as President Donald Trump challenged the results. Benson is an attorney who graduated from Harvard Law School. She later taught law at Wayne State University and served as its dean.

James campaigned with strong backing from Trump, which helped him secure the Republican primary nomination. In the weeks before the general election, he sought to differentiate himself from the former president. He removed specific mentions of Trump from his campaign website. During an early October debate, James stated he would challenge Trump on the Iran war and tariffs on Canada. He noted that those tariffs have had a severe impact on Michigan.

The two candidates exchanged criticisms on several issues. Benson pointed out that James did not vote for congressional resolutions to end the Iran war. They also debated data centers. James claimed Benson's family profited from the construction of one facility. Benson denied this. She countered that James voted for policies favoring data centers while holding stocks in them. James responded that his holdings were in broad mutual funds.

Benson's victory occurs as Michigan Democrats attempt to secure control of the state legislature. The party currently holds the state Senate but lacks a majority in the state House. To achieve full control of state government, Democrats must gain four additional seats in the House and retain their Senate majority.

Election officials also await results for the U.S. Senate race. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is competing against Republican Mike Rogers for the seat vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters. This contest has attracted national attention. In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump carried Michigan by slightly more than one percentage point.
