Melat Kiros will join the House of Representatives in January as the first woman from Generation Z to hold a federal congressional seat. At 29, she is younger than most of her colleagues and is joining a small group of legislators born in the late 1990s. Her victory marks a shift in the demographic makeup of the chamber, following the 2022 election of Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z man to win a House seat.

Kiros’s path to Washington began in 2023 when she was dismissed from a New York City law firm. She had co-signed an open letter addressing antisemitism during campus protests, which led to her termination. She returned to Colorado and worked as the communications director for John Padora’s 2024 congressional campaign. She later decided to run for office herself, citing a disconnect between the Democratic Party and its base.

The candidate focused her message on affordability and generational change. She also opposed U.S. military support for Israel. Incumbent Diana DeGette challenged Kiros’s inexperience, arguing against the risks of electing a political newcomer. Kiros countered that her youth allowed her to approach problems without being constrained by long-standing institutional norms. She noted that she worked as a barista while pursuing a doctorate in public policy during her campaign.

Research from the Future Caucus shows that 117 Gen Z candidates filed to run for Congress in the 2026 midterms. Only 24 of those candidates appeared on the general election ballots. Kiros believes the current system often forces young, working-class candidates to make large financial and personal sacrifices to compete. She plans to tackle Medicaid and SNAP cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act as soon as she arrives in office.

Other policy priorities include ending military aid to Israel and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She also intends to build support for Medicare for All, universal childcare, and eldercare. The Congressional Progressive Caucus is helping her and other new members prepare for their roles. This support includes practical advice on living arrangements to ensure quick access to the Capitol.
