8.7 Million Followers Get a Three-Finger Salute
Jennifer Lawrence invoked Katniss Everdeen to push midterms turnout without naming a candidate.

Jennifer Lawrence posted a photo of herself making the three-finger salute on Tuesday, a direct visual cue to her 8.7 million Instagram followers to cast their ballots in the midterm elections. The post did not name a party or a candidate. It asked only for action.
The caption read: "Midterms [baby]. Don't forget who burns with us. Go vote." Lawrence included a link to Vote.org, a platform that allows users to locate their nearest polling place. The specific phrase "burns with us" references a line from "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1," released in 2014.
In that film, Katniss Everdeen delivers a speech to President Snow after her district is bombed. She states, "Fire is catching. And if we burn, you burn with us!" The moment marks the character's full commitment to leading the rebellion against the Capitol.
Lawrence did not explicitly criticize Donald Trump in the post. However, many followers interpreted the message as political. This interpretation relies on the long-standing comparison between the fictional President Snow and the former president. Lawrence was openly critical of Trump during his first term in office.
After Trump won the 2024 election, Lawrence wrote an op-ed stating that the result meant only white men felt safe in America and that their rights were recognized. Last year, she suggested she might stop speaking out on politics. In an interview with The New York Times, she noted that celebrities do not change who people vote for.
"We are so divided," she said at the time. She described her position as a "complicated recalibration" as an artist. Lawrence said she wanted to protect her craft so audiences could still get lost in her work without being forced to engage with her political opinions. She added that unless she could offer peace or a solution, she did not want to make the problem worse.
Since that interview, Lawrence has kept political talk to a minimum. Her Election Day post marks a return to public encouragement for voting. This timing coincides with her return to the role in "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping." Lionsgate will open that prequel in theaters on November 20.
