College basketball fans in the state saw the power dynamic shift decisively on Monday night. The No. 1 Florida Gators defeated the No. 14 Miami Hurricanes by a 10-point margin, 77 to 67. The result at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa marks the first time Florida has won this matchup since losing to Iowa at the same venue on March 22. That previous loss occurred in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a memory the Gators left behind tonight.

Thomas Haugh, a 6-foot-9 senior, controlled the pace for the visitors. He finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. His performance included five offensive boards, four assists, two steals, and one block. Haugh did not turn the ball over and made four of his eight attempts from beyond the arc. Rueben Chinyelu provided support on the glass, securing 14 rebounds and adding six points. The Gators relied on a physical style of play that defined the contest.

Miami responded with early scoring pressure. The Hurricanes scored the first eight points of the second half. Somto Cyril cut the Florida lead to 53-51 after grabbing a missed free throw and dunking. Acaden Lewis, a transfer from Villanova, led the offense with 24 points in his debut for Miami. Despite the surge, the visitors stabilized their defense. Florida held Miami without a field goal for a five-minute span. Urban Klavzar extended the lead with a three-pointer, putting Florida ahead 66-55.

The game was tight for the first eight minutes. Florida broke the deadlock with a 9-0 run that established control. Isaiah Brown contributed late in the first half. He secured a putback dunk after a miss by Haugh, extending the advantage to 44-32. The physical nature of the game resulted in two technical fouls. Referees also upgraded three fouls to flagrants. The contest featured the intensity expected from an in-state rivalry.

Florida retains its core roster across multiple seasons, a factor that contributed to tonight's effort. The team played with muscle and effort throughout the contest. The victory secures the season opener for the Gators. Miami also plays its first game of the season, dropping the decision to their rival.

The schedule moves forward with both teams hosting opponents later this week. Florida welcomes Jacksonville on Thursday night. Miami hosts Wagner on Friday night. These upcoming fixtures offer the next opportunities for both programs to adjust after the opening weekend.
