One man in the Fargo-Moorhead area spends Halloween night hiding in shadows to startle passersby. He dresses as Jason Voorhees, the killer from the horror films.
The transformation requires substantial effort before he steps outside. This year, he did not prepare alone. His son assisted with the details. The father described the experience as a transfer of knowledge. He said, “Getting my son involved, it was really cool to see the passing of the torch. Well, I still hold the torch still, but sharing it, I guess.”
Once he is in character, he adopts a specific routine. He refers to this state as “hunting mode.” He explained, “I just get into that mode, it’s almost like a hunting mode. I just gotta stay in the shadows and look where people are coming.” He waits in the dark. He listens and watches. He allows people to feel safe for a brief moment before he strikes.
He targets groups visiting different locations. He noted that many adults believe they are immune to fear. He said, “They go around to different places and then I end up catching them. It’s funny how many adults I get that think they’re unscareable.”
He has maintained this routine for years. He views the activity as a way to enjoy the holiday. He said, “I just love Halloween, it’s fun scaring people and getting dressed up and getting into character.”
