Maxine Waters is projected to win reelection in California’s 43rd Congressional District on Tuesday. The result positions the 88-year-old Democrat to continue representing the South Los Angeles and South Bay regions.
NBC News projected that Waters defeated her Republican challenger, Cristian Morales, by a large margin. With nearly 55% of expected ballots counted, Waters received approximately 82% of the vote. Morales received 18.3%. This outcome aligns with the June primary results, where Waters secured four times as many votes as Morales.
The victory allows Waters to maintain her leadership role on the House Financial Services Committee. The panel oversees the banking industry, housing, and financial markets. She previously chaired the committee from 2019 to 2023, becoming the first woman and first African American to hold that position.
Waters first entered Congress in 1990. Before that, she served 14 years in the California State Assembly, where she rose to become the Democratic caucus chair. She has also been a member of the Democratic National Committee since 1980 and contributed to five presidential campaigns.
Her career includes a period of scrutiny following an ethics investigation. Accusations suggested she improperly used her influence to help a bank secure federal funding. The district includes Inglewood, Compton, Hawthorne, and Torrance, areas with sizable Black and Latino populations.
Waters has adopted the nickname “Aunty Maxine,” a moniker popular among younger supporters. Her direct criticism of President Donald Trump and his administration has increased her national profile. In an interview with Politico, she addressed concerns about her age, stating she has more energy than younger people.
The win continues her long tenure in office despite a national trend of younger candidates gaining momentum. The 43rd District remains a stronghold for Democratic candidates.
