The Milwaukee Brewers ended a 44-year championship drought on Wednesday night by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 of the World Series. The victory at Tropicana Field gave the small-market club its first title in franchise history. Thousands of fans in attendance erupted in celebration as the final out was recorded.

Jacob Misiorowski opened the game with 12 straight four-seam fastballs, reaching speeds between 100.9 and 103 mph. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. He left the game due to a right calf cramp and received a standing ovation from the crowd behind the Brewers dugout.

Rookie Cooper Pratt set a Series record by hitting six straight times before his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Pratt also collected an RBI single in the second inning off Rays starter Drew Rasmussen to give Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. William Contreras, named the Series Most Valuable Player, hit an RBI double in the sixth to extend the lead to 3-0.

Manager Pat Murphy credited the team's unity for the win. The 67-year-old skipper, who survived a heart attack in 2020, noted that the players focused on winning rather than individual statistics. Murphy said the group would be remembered forever for their collective effort.

The championship marks the 58th season for a team that began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969. The Brewers previously reached the World Series in 1982 but lost in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals after blowing a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning of the final game.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash described his team as grateful for their season despite the loss. The Rays, an expansion club that debuted in 1998, dropped to 0-3 in World Series history. Only the Brooklyn Dodgers and Detroit Tigers have lost more World Series games in their first three appearances.

The Brewers led the majors with 103 regular-season wins and went 11-2 in the playoffs. They relied on small-ball tactics, scoring just 32.1% of their runs on home runs, a major league low. The team swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS after seven comeback victories in the postseason.

Owner Mark Attanasio told fans on the postgame stage that Milwaukee had waited 44 years for the title. The win comes as MLB owners push for a salary cap, with a likely lockout scheduled to begin on December 2. This was the first World Series since 1991 to feature two teams in the bottom half of payrolls.

The Brewers will return to their home city for a parade. Captain Christian Yelich expressed excitement about celebrating with the fans who waited decades for the trophy.
