Apple Raises iPhone Duo Production Targets to Meet Record Demand

The tech giant has increased manufacturing orders by over 40 percent after initial delivery delays signaled a surge in consumer interest for its first folding smartphone.

For the first time in the launch of a major Apple device, customers found their estimated delivery windows stretching into late January almost immediately after pre-orders opened. This initial confusion over whether the delays were due to supply issues or overwhelming interest has now been clarified by new supply chain data. Apple has reportedly boosted its production orders for the iPhone Duo by more than 40 percent, a significant move that confirms the high level of anticipation surrounding the company’s first folding phone.

The shift in production strategy became apparent shortly after pre-orders began on Friday. Many buyers reported receiving extended shipping dates, with some slots pushed as far back as late January. At the time, it was unclear if these delays were a result of logistical bottlenecks or a genuine surge in sales. However, recent reports from DigiTimes, which cite supply chain sources, indicate that Apple is ramping up manufacturing to keep pace with what the company described as extraordinary demand. It is worth noting that Apple frequently uses this specific phrase for new iPhone launches, so the company also implemented a limit of two units per customer to help manage inventory and reduce scalping.

As the initial wave of orders was processed, some customers began seeing their estimated shipping dates move earlier. This adjustment aligns with the reported increase in shipment targets. The new data suggests that Apple expects strong demand to persist and has raised its production goals from 9.7 million to 14 million units over the first 12 months. This substantial increase reflects a confident stance from the company regarding the market reception of the new hardware.

Early adopters of the iPhone Duo are already sharing their experiences, though they are navigating a transitional period for the software ecosystem. Third-party applications are not yet fully optimized for the new device, a challenge that Apple acknowledges is being addressed rapidly as developers adapt their code. Initial reviews based on a week of usage have highlighted app support as one of the five key takeaways for potential buyers. While the hardware has received attention, the software integration remains a critical area of focus for users during the launch phase.

Another point of discussion in early reviews is the decision to use Touch ID rather than Face ID for the initial release. Some users viewed this as a step backward in security features compared to previous flagship models. However, a new report indicates that Apple is already testing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2 that feature Face ID. This suggests that the company is aware of user feedback and is working to incorporate the more familiar biometric authentication method in future iterations of the folding smartphone.

Looking ahead, the success of the iPhone Duo will depend on how quickly the app ecosystem matures and how effectively Apple manages the increased production volume. The jump in shipment targets signals that Apple is prepared to meet the current demand, but the company will need to ensure that the supply chain can sustain this higher output without further delays. For consumers, the situation is stabilizing, with more accurate delivery dates emerging as production scales up. The coming weeks will likely reveal whether the initial enthusiasm translates into long-term satisfaction for the first generation of folding iPhone users.
