For people living through the present day, October 26 carries the weight of specific historical turning points that still echo in politics and warfare. The most recent major event tied to the date occurred in 2002, when a Chechen rebel hostage crisis in Moscow ended with a military assault. More than 800 people were held captive in the theater. Russian special forces entered the building and used a knockout gas to end the standoff. A total of 129 hostages died, with the majority of those deaths attributed to the gas. Forty-one rebels were also killed during the operation.
The date has long been a marker for American infrastructure and conflict. In 1825, the Erie Canal opened in upstate New York, creating a direct water link between Lake Erie and the Hudson River. This project reshaped trade routes across the eastern United States. Decades later, in 1881, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday participated in a gunfight with five outlaws in Tombstone, Arizona. Three of the outlaws died in the exchange, an event later popularized as the Shootout at the O.K. Corral. In 1979, South Korean President Park Chung-hee was shot dead by Kim Jae-kyu, the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency.
The 20th century saw the date mark military engagements and medical experiments. In 1942, Japanese bombers damaged the aircraft carrier USS Hornet near the Solomon Islands. The crew abandoned the ship, and Japanese torpedoes sank it the following day. In 1984, a baby in Loma Linda, California, received a baboon heart in an experimental transplant to treat a severe defect. The infant lived for 21 days after the procedure.
Recent years have brought political confirmations and international strikes to the anniversary. In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act, granting authorities expanded powers to search and monitor communications in counterterrorism efforts. In 2020, the U.S. Senate confirmed Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court days before the general election. In 2024, Israel launched airstrikes on military targets in Iran, marking the first time its military openly attacked that country. This followed a barrage of ballistic missiles Iran fired at Israel on October 1 of that year.
The day also coincides with the birthdays of several public figures. Musician Milton Nascimento turns 84, and actor Jaclyn Smith celebrates her 81st birthday. TV host Pat Sajak is 80, while former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton is 79. Musician Bootsy Collins and artist Julian Schnabel are both 75. Actor-singer Rita Wilson turns 70, and singer Natalie Merchant is 63. Country singer Keith Urban is 59, writer-producer Seth MacFarlane is 53, and pro wrestler CM Punk is 48.
