Cameron Carr will don his first Lakers jersey on Sunday night when the team faces the Toronto Raptors at Crypto.com Arena. The 21-year-old guard was officially cleared to play after his name was removed from the league-mandated injury report on Saturday afternoon. This move ends a two-week wait that began when a right oblique strain kept him in street clothes during the season opener against the Golden State Warriors.

Coach JJ Redick confirmed Carr’s availability during the pregame press conference. Redick indicated that if Carr plays, the coaching staff expects him to execute specific defensive assignments. These include protecting the paint, applying physicality off the ball, and crashing the boards. Redick also noted the importance of making shots and staying disciplined within the team’s system.

Carr described his physical condition as good on Friday. He expressed a desire to play through the anxiety of his debut. His goal is to make a single impactful play, such as a steal or a deflection, to settle his nerves. The rookie called the opportunity a blessing and said he is taking in the moment before stepping onto the court.

The guard entered the 2026 NBA draft as a first-round selection at No. 24. During his final season at Baylor, Carr averaged 18.9 points per game on 49.4% field goal shooting. He also connected on 37.4% of his three-point attempts. In summer league and preseason action, his numbers dipped slightly. He averaged 17.4 points on 42.3% shooting over seven games. In the preseason opener against Sacramento, he scored 19 points while shooting 7-for-13 from the floor and 3-for-7 from deep.

Carr has focused on increasing his physical strength and defensive intensity since joining the organization. He stated that he feels stronger after five months with the team. He credits veteran teammates for helping him improve his defensive habits daily. The son of former NBA player Chris Carr views his role as developing into a disruptive defender who can harass opponents.

Lawson Lovering also joins the roster on a two-way contract. The 23-year-old center signed the two-year deal on Wednesday after a quick packing session. He has practiced with the G League’s Coachella Valley Lakers since his arrival. Lovering averaged 7.7 points and 7.0 rebounds for the Memphis Hustle last season. He sees setting screens for Luka Doncic and learning from Walker Kessler as key parts of his adjustment to Los Angeles.

Lovering described his role as performing gritty, fundamental tasks. He does not expect a large offensive share of the ball. His focus is on rebounding and setting hard screens to free up teammates. He aims to compete at a high intensity in every practice and game appearance.

The Lakers begin their season with a victory over Golden State. Carr sat on the bench for that game due to the oblique strain. He has completed three practices with the G League affiliate this week. The team will announce the starting lineup for the game against Toronto shortly before tip-off.
