Charlotte-Mecklenburg Climate Leaders hosted a trivia night focused on hyperscale data centers at Patagonia Charlotte in South End on Tuesday evening. The volunteer organization aims to increase public awareness of how large computing facilities affect the local environment and economy.

The event occurred one day after the Charlotte City Council voted to extend the city's data center moratorium by 11 months. Faith Silva, the group's coordinator, noted that data centers are currently a frequent subject in local news and community conversations. She described them as a dominant topic for environmental advocates.

Approximately 20 residents attended the gathering. Some participated in teams, while others competed individually. Nundy Silva, who played alone, named his single-person entry 'Hey Nunnie Nunnie!' after a Renaissance fair act. The questions covered specific issues such as water consumption, utility costs, and regional political dynamics.

Participants who won the game received new outdoor clothing. Those who did not win gained detailed information on the current regulatory status of the industry. Silva expressed relief upon learning the specific length of the new moratorium.

The council's decision grants residents and officials nearly a full year to examine the impacts of data centers before the current pause expires on October 18, 2027. The extension provides a defined window for public engagement and policy review before new construction projects can proceed in the area.
