New vehicle interfaces create a tension between technological capability and driver focus. Complex screens and unintuitive controls often pull attention away from the road. Consumer Reports has issued guidance on managing these distractions to maintain safe driving conditions.

Maddie McCarty, a human factors engineer at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center, evaluates the usability of controls in new trucks and cars. She notes that certain functions are critical for safety but frequently difficult to operate. These specific controls include windshield wipers, headlights, high beams, and defrosters. McCarty argues that these features should be quick and easy to access while driving.

To mitigate the risk of in-vehicle distraction, the organization advises drivers to master their cars before driving. This involves inspecting essential features such as temperature settings, fan speed, and cruise control while the vehicle is parked. Drivers should also configure personal customizations during this pre-drive period. This preparation allows for smoother operation while on the move.

Smartphone usage remains a primary source of driver inattention. More than one in five drivers reported using their smartphones on most or all trips. The organization states that looking away from the road for just two seconds can double the risk of a crash. Handling a phone while driving is dangerous and often illegal. If a text requires sending, drivers should pull over to a safe location and place the car in park before using the device.

The rise of complex infotainment systems means that many drivers struggle with basic vehicle functions. Dealerships can assist owners in understanding these controls. This support is often available at no cost to the customer. Understanding the interface reduces the cognitive load required to operate the vehicle.
