Consumer prices rose faster than expected in September, intensifying economic anxiety less than a week before the midterm elections. The Department of Commerce reported on Thursday that the annual inflation rate climbed to 3.6%, up from 3.4% in August. This marks the highest monthly increase since May, with prices jumping 0.5% from the previous month compared to a 0.3% rise in August.

The acceleration in costs has followed a conflict with Iran that drove up energy expenses. Crude oil prices in the United States remain above 100 dollars per barrel, a sharp increase from levels below 70 dollars prior to the war. Gasoline stands at an average of 4.25 dollars per gallon nationwide, far above the sub-2-dollar target President Donald Trump pledged during his 2024 campaign.

Polls indicate that rising costs have damaged the President's approval ratings regarding economic management. Voters cite higher prices as a primary concern, creating a challenging environment for the administration ahead of the vote. The Federal Reserve closely monitors these indicators to gauge the trajectory of monetary policy.

Even after removing volatile food and energy categories, underlying inflation showed upward pressure. Core inflation increased to 3.1% year over year in September, up from 3% in August. On a monthly basis, core prices rose by 0.3%, matching the pace recorded in the previous month. The data suggests that price growth is broadening beyond the immediate impact of the energy sector.
